BLACKSBURG, VA — Coastal Carolina University placed second in the 2002 Big South Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Liberty University captured its fifth consecutive BSC crown in the meet held at Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Liberty posted 188 points to earn the Conference crown followed by Coastal Carolina (157.5 points), High Point (77.5) and Charleston Southern (53). Radford (51.5) and Winthrop (47.5) placed fifth and sixth, while UNC Asheville (43) and Elon (6) rounded out the women's eight team field. For the Lady Chanticleers, the 157.5 points marked the highest point total ever by a CCU indoor squad.
Amber Campbell and Courtney Samuel each garnered two gold medals, while Kara Koppel earned one gold medal to pace Coastal Carolina. Campbell won the individual championship in both the 20-pound weight throw and the shot put. Samuel won in the high jump and the triple jump, while Kara Koppel captured gold in the 3,000-meter run.
With her performance, Campbell collected her second consecutive Most Outstanding Field Performer at the Big South's Indoor Championships. Coastal Carolina Head Coach Alan Connie and Liberty's Brant Tolsma were the Co-Women's Coaches of the Year.
