COLUMBIA, S.C. — Coastal Carolina University's women's outdoor track and field team scored an impressive victory at the 2002 South Carolina State Collegiate Championships, defeating its nearest competitor by 57 points.
The Lady Chanticleers posted 191.5 points, while Big South rival Charleston Southern placed second with 134.5 points. The University of South Carolina, ranked fourth nationally and running on its home track, placed fourth with 83 points.
Overall, CCU's women were named State Champions in seven events and earned 19 All-State honors. Marilyn Testa and Courtney Samuel led the Lady Chanticleers with a combined five state titles. Testa captured first place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.76), pole vault (11'11.75") and as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team (4:13.71), while Samuel won her second consecutive state high jump championship (5'5") and captured the triple jump title (38'6.25"). Others earning State Championship honors were Lindsey Kozlowski in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:30.51), Michelle Mentzer, Jessica Watson and Latrice Sales in the 4x400-meter relay, and Jackie Lugaila in the shot put (39'2.5").
The Coastal Carolina men's team placed third with 101.5 points to finish behind South Carolina State's 132 and South Carolina's 119.5. Seniors Mike Roden and Campbell Claridge led the way for the Chanticleers as they each garnered State Champion honors. Roden earned a pair of state title by winning both the shot put (49'11") and discus (154'11")events, while Campbell took first place in the 1,500-meter run (4:04.78).
