LYNCHBURG, VA — Liberty's men's track and field team got off to a great start in defending its eight consecutive Big South Conference Championships with 64 points after the second day of action of the 2002 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The final day of the Championship begins at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and will conclude with an awards ceremony at 3:00 p.m.
Coastal Carolina scored 37 points in the opening two days to hold third place, just two points behind second place UNC Asheville.
Leading the way on Friday were the Roden brothers junior Ken Cole. Senior Mike Roden captured the championship in the discus (49.07 meters), while younger brother Matt Roden captured the title in the hammer (52.99 meters). Cole captured the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.41 seconds. Other CCU performers placing in the top three of events and thus earning Big South All-Conference honors on Friday were Ray Felton (110m hurdles, 3rd, 15.32) and Keith Garramone (decathlon, 2nd, 6,057 points).
