CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Coastal Carolina men's and women's cross country juniors Terah Kipchiris (Kitall, Kenya/Saboti Secondary) and Anne Marie Moutsinga (Galati, Romania/Radu Negru) finished 102nd and 48th, respectively, at the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday, Nov. 24, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. Each runner qualified individually at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet, finishing in the top four amongst individuals who weren't members of qualifying teams.
Kipchiris, who finished the 10,000-meter course in 30:53 and ran in a field of 254, led the Coastal men's team this season, posting four first-place finishes and two second-place finishes this season. He won the individual Big South Conference title, and was named Conference Men's Runner of the Year for 2003. Kipchiris placed fifth at the Southeast Regionals, and was the first male athlete to be a national qualifier in Coastal track and field history in 2002.
Moutsinga also led her team this year, winning the Big South individual crown and helping the team to its third consecutive Big South Championship. She was also named Big South Runner of the Year and finished 10th at the Southeast Regional. Moutsinga ran the 6,000-meter course at the nationa meet in 20:53, placing 48th in a field of 252 runners.
Stanford swept both the men's and women's team titles, and Colorado's Dathan Ritzenhein and North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan won the individual men's and women's crowns.
Both CCU cross country teams have wrapped up their 2003 seasons with the national meet. Kipchiris and Moutsinga will be back in action with Coastal track and field in the winter and spring of this year.
