Baseball Splits Doubleheader at High Point

HIGH POINT, NC — Coastal Carolina (28-11, 4-3) rallied for a 5-1 win in the second game to salvage a split with host High Point (12-28, 3-10 Big South), after losing the opener, 3-2, in a doubleheader at Erath Field.

In the opener, Burch (4-5) scattered two runs over seven innings of work against the Big South's second-highest scoring team.

HPU scored three runs in the fifth to a take a 3-0 lead off CCU starter Justin Sturge (7-2). Nick Thompson smashed a lead-off double and advanced to third on a base hit by Jayson Hoffman. Matt Gorman drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.

After Sturge struck out Matt Christie, Colin Cronin came through with an RBI single to score Thompson, and Rey Rojas' fielders' choice plated Hoffman. Gorman scored on an error by CCU catcher Chad Oxendine to give the Panthers a 3-0 advantage.

Coastal countered with two runs in the seventh on a Ryan McGraw triple which scored Oxendine and Adam Pernasilici.

Kniginyzky relieved Burch in the eighth and threw two hitless innings for his first-career save.

In game two, the Panthers drew first blood in their first at bat. Cronin led off with a double, advanced to third on a balk by Seamus Donovan, and scored on a Gorman single.

The Chants tied things up in the third when Kyle Beall came around to score on an error by HPU first baseman Kemp Smith. CCU took the lead for good in the fourth on an RBI single by Oxendine which scored Pernasilici.

CCU added a trio of insurance runs in the seventh. Donovan (3-4) got the win, while Kniginyzky (1-7) took the loss.

The Panthers return to action Monday at Appalachian State. First pitch in Boone is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
