Box Score 2 Baseball Sweeps a Pair from UNCW WILMINGTON, NC — Coastal Carolina completed a sweep of the four-game regular season series with UNC Wilmington by trimming the Seahawks, 9-7
and 6-2, in a pair of college baseball games Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Chanticleers improved to 33-12 overall after topping the Seahawks, 9-7, in a game continued from April 8 and then claiming a four-run decision in the regularly scheduled contest. UNCW fell to 33-17 with the two losses.
Coastal starter Byron Binda (5-1) worked 6 2/3 innings in the second game and allowed two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three. Senior reliever Seamus Donovan collected his first save of the season. UNCW's Jake Mullis (7-5) pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, walking two and fanning one.
Seven different players had one hit each for the Chanticleers, who also had five sacrifices in the contest. Junior infielder Kyle Beall and senior outfielder Jeff Baker had two runs batted in apiece for Coastal. Senior outfielder Jamie Hemingway, junior catcher Pat Murphy and senior first baseman Matt Wright had two hits apiece to pace the Seahawks offensively. Hemingway went 2-for-4, Murphy had two hits in three at-bats and Wright went 2-for-3 with a walk.
The Chanticleers took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first. Ryan McGraw drew a leadoff walk and was bunted to second by Brett Grandstrand. Brandon Powell then singled McGraw to third and Baker lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the first run of the game.
The Seahawks answered with a run in the bottom of the second to even the score at 1-all. With one out, Wright walked and one out later, Matt Sutton laced a single, advancing Wright to third. Wright then scored on an attempted double steal before Sutton was thrown out between first and second.
Coastal scored twice in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage. Greg Orsamarsi reached second on an error by UNCW centerfielder Chip Grawey. Orsamarsi then raced to third when McGraw took first on a bunt single. Grandstrand dropped down a sacrifice bunt that scored Orsamarsi and moved McGraw to second before Beall grounded out to third. Baker then slapped an RBI single to plate McGraw for the second run.
The Chanticleers added two more runs in the fourth on just two hits to push the lead to 5-1. Patrick Nichols started the rally with a one-out double and Coastal wound up scoring a pair of runs on two hits wrapped around one error. Beall's two-run single scored Nichols and Orsamarsi for CCU.
Hemingway slugged his eighth homer of the season with a solo shot over the leftfield wall in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-2 before Coastal added an insurance run in the ninth.
In the game continued from April 8, Coastal took a 9-5 lead into bottom of the fifth inning and hung on for a 9-7 decision. Sophomore lefty Jake Hurry (5-1) picked up the win for the Chants and senior reliever Brian Waack picked up his second save of the season.
The Seahawks return to action Friday when they meet UNC Chapel Hill at 7 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. The Chanticleers return home to entertain The Citadel Wednesday at 6 p.m.
