Box Score Baseball Falls to UNCW 12-0
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s (20-16) Zach Kimball threw eight innings of shutout, two-hit baseball and the Seahawks scored six runs in the first and never looked back, defeating the Coastal Carolina University baseball team (24-12) 12-0 April 20 in Wilmington, N.C.
UNC Wilmington sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the first, grabbing a 6-0 lead. UNCW’s Neal Eichhorn scored the first run for the Seahawks with a single up the middle to score Jonathon Batts. Aaron Smith then followed with a three-run home run to left field to make the score 4-0. Four batters later, Robert White drove in Tim Preston and John Raynor to make the score 6-0. The Seahawks scored a run in the second as Smith earned his fourth RBI on a single to score Batts.
In the fourth, UNCW made the score 8-0 on a sacrifice fly by Eichhorn. The Seahawks added a run in the fifth on a double down the line by Matt Poulk, scoring Raynor. White brought Raynor home with a single to right field, giving UNCW a 10-0 lead. A fielding error by junior Brett Gordon (Sonora, Calif./Merced J.C.) brought home UNCW’s 11th run of the game. A sacrifice fly by Poulk in the sixth gave the Seahawks a 12-0 lead.
Freshman Kevin Marrie (Clarksvile, Md./River Hill) took the loss for the Chants, going four innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs while walking four and striking out one.
Kimball struck out five, walked three and earned his third victory of the season.
Singles by junior Jason Krohn (Gresham, Ore./Lower Columbia College) in the fourth, freshman Danny Morgan (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian) in the seventh and sophomore Michael DeJesus (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina) accounted for the only hits by the Chanticleers.
Coastal returns to Conway, S.C., to face 27th-ranked College of Charleston Wednesday, April 21, at 6 p.m.
