PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman Daneja Grandovec (Maribor, Slovenia/Gimnasija Maribor), junior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)), and sophomore Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) posted record-setting performances this weekend at the Penn Relays Carnival, a prestigious outdoor track and field meet hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
Grandovec, who previously broke the school 3,000-meter steeplechase record this season, ran the event in 10:45.37 seconds, placing 11th overall. Kipchiris placed sixth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:54.80 seconds, breaking the school record, which he already held, by over five seconds. Johnson also improved on the school record he broke this season, clearing 5.15 meters/16'10.75" in the pole vault and earning the bronze by placing third overall.
Senior Amber Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) also continued her impressive season, throwing the hammer 65.68 meters/215'6" to place second behind Florida's Candice Scott. Campbell's throw was the second-longest in the history of the Penn Relays.
Other Chanticleers competing at the meet included senior Marilyn Testa (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald), who cleared 3.75 meters and placed eighth in the pole vault. Freshman Lital Azulay (Holon, Israel/Kiryat-Sharet) was impressive in the women's Olympic development 5,000-meter run, placing eighth in a field of over 30 runners with a time of 17:05.12 seconds. Freshman Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) jumped 12.52 meters in the triple jump, and junior Lindsey Kozlowski (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Port Arthur Collegiate) also ran the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 11:28.53 seconds.
For the men, sophomore Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangebur-Wilkinson (Claflin)) finished 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 14.27 meters, and freshman Thomas Jordan (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) also placed 11th in the javelin, tossing for 62.43 meters. Junior Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) ran the 400-meter hurdles in 54.95 seconds for a 44th place finish, and the men's 4x400-meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 3:14.91 seconds.
Both the men's and women's squads are back in action next weekend at the NC/SC All-Star Invitational, Saturday, May 1, in Clemson, S.C.
