LEXINGTON, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (20-10, 3-4 Big South) scored four runs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit and defeat the Virginia Military Institute (18-16, 0-7 Big South) 8-5 April 9 in Lexington, Va. It was Coastal's 11th come-from-behind win of the year.

Coastal opened the first on a solo home run from junior Brett Grandstrand (Newcastle, Wash./Liberty). Cosatal tacked on another run in the third when sophomore Michael DeJesus (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina) hit a double over the head of B.T. Good that scored senior Chad Oxendine (Rowland, N.C./Avalon Academy). Good gave the Keydets a run in the bottom of the frame with a shot to left field.

VMI took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. A Brandon Massenburg triple drove in Kelly Sweppenheiser. Massenburg then scored on a wild pitch from junior Jake Hurry (East Moline, Ill./Alleman). In the fifth, DeJesus drove in freshman Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) with an RBI single to left to tie the game. VMI garnered a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Sweppenheiser.

Freshman Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) hit a solo shot in the sixth to tie the game at four. VMI took the lead in the seventh when with two outs, Jacoby Fields hit a grounder that was misplayed by Grandstrand, scoring Matt Smith.

Coastal came through with four runs in the eighth. Sophomore Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) led off the inning with a walk and junior Jon Foisy (Ridgecrest, Calif./Cerro Coso C.C.) put runners on first and second with a one-out single. Junior Brett Gordon (Sonora, Calif./Merced J.C.) walked to load the bases. Oxendine stepped up with a big two-out, two-run single to right field. Senior Ryan McGraw (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) then drove in two more with a double down the left field line.

Junior Byron Binda (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) picked up the win in relief, going the last 2.2 innings, striking out five and allowing no hits or runs. Hurry went 6.1 innings, striking out seven and allowing six hits and four earned runs. The loss went to Jeff DeMara, who gave three runs and three hits in two innings.

McGraw, DeJesus and Oxendine all had two hits and drove in two runs in the win.

The Chants and Keydets play a doubleheader to conclude their three-game set Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m.
