CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) and sophomore Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) placed first in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively, at the Blue Heaven Classic, Saturday, May 8, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Chasity Johnson won the triple jump with a new school record of 12.69 meters/41'7.5". She also earned a bronze in the long jump with a distance of 5.94 meters/19'5.75". Mark Johnson bettered his pole vault mark once again, clearing 5.25 meters/17'2.5" to place first and set a new school record.
Other medal-winners included freshman Galen Jones (Evans, Ga./Lakeside), who threw a new personal best in the shot put with a distance of 13.88 meters/45'6.5" to finish second, and senior Jacob Simatwa (Endebess, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)) placed third with an 800-meter time of 1:51.56. Sophomore Johnny Mitchell (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:37.44, and junior Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) also finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.83 seconds, setting a new personal best.
Next up for Coastal Carolina outdoor track and field is the Georgia Tech Invitational this Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, in Atlanta, where both squads will attempt to add last-minute NCAA regional qualifiers to their lists.
