Carter, Costanzo Named to All-Region Second Team

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University baseball senior Steven Carter (Windsor, Ontario/St. Anne’s) and sophomore Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) were named to the All-Atlantic Region Second Team, announced today (June 18).

Carter, a starting pitcher, went 12-3 with a 4.11 earned-run-average in 122.2 innings. Carter struck out a team high 116 batters this season, while walking only 32. Carter had 22 appearances in 2004, starting 16 games and pitching a complete-game in the first round of the 2004 Big South Tournament, an 8-2 win over Radford May 26. Carter then defeated Birmingham-Southern 7-5 May 29 to win its fourth straight Big South Tournament. He pitched 8.2 innings, striking out seven and walking two to earn his 42nd career win and was named the Big South Tournament MVP for the second straight season. Carter also was a First Team All-Big South selection for the second time in his career. He is the Coastal and Big South all-time leader in wins, games started (68) and innings pitched (450.1) and was second to Scott Sturkie in career strikeouts (389). Carter had a career-high 13 strikeouts against Winthrop April 2 and struck out six or more batters eight times in 2004. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 26th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

Costanzo, a designated hitter, became the fifth player in Coastal history to earn the Big South Most Valuable Player honor after hitting .359 with 21 doubles, 21 home runs and 74 runs-batted-in. He led the team in all four categories, while leading the Big South in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage (.740). He also was a First Team All-Big South performer. Costanzo holds the Coastal single-season record for RBI, breaking Frank Talotta’s record of 68 set in 1983. Costanzo was a two-time Big South Player of the Week and had 24 multi-hit and seven multi-home run games in 2004. Costanzo also has excelled on the mound, going 7-4 with one save in 66.2 innings of work. He earned the win in Coastal’s 5-3 victory over Birmingham-Southern in the winner’s bracket championship final, going five innings of reiief and allowing only one run. Costanzo is playing for the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod League this summer.

Coastal (40-23) won its fourth consecutive Big South Tournament title this season, advancing to the NCAA regional for the fourth straight season. Coastal’s season came to a close June 5, falling to North Carolina 6-5 and The Citadel 10-1 in the NCAA Columbia Regional.
