CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina University men's and women's cross country teams finished second and third, respectively, at the University of North Carolina Cross Country Challenge Sept. 18, at the Ranson-Hamrick Cross Country Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. Coastal faced the Tarheels and the UNC Alumni team in the race.
On the men's side, the Chanticleers scored 47 points, behind UNC's 29. The UNC Alumni Team finished third with 49 points. Leading the way for Coastal was senior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary) who won the 8K race in 25:14. It is his second win in as many weeks. Junior Nelson Oliveria (Coimbra, Portugal/Quintas das Flores) finished eighth in 25:58, while sophomore Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) finished ninth in 26:02. Junior Johnny Mitchell (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) was 16th in a time of 26:39 and freshman Blair Paul (South Queenstown, Ontario) was 17th in 26:43.
North Carolina won the women's race with 21 points, followed by the UNC Alumni with 50 and Coastal with 59. Leading the way for the Lady Chants was senior Anne Marie Moutsinga (Galati, Romania/Radu Negru), who finished fourth in a time of 18:03 on the 5K course. Freshman Christina Mohr (Ulmen, Germany) was Coastal's other top-10 finisher, placing 10th in a time of 18:54. Senior Kim Nemergut (Youngstown, Ohio/South Range) was 15th in a time of 19:04. Senior Lindsey Kozlowski (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Port Arthur Collegiate) was 16th at 19:06 and freshman Aubrey Bergquist (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) was 18th in a time of 19:11. North Carolina's Erin Donohue won the race in 17:33.
Both teams will travel to Cary, N.C., Friday, Oct. 1 for the Great American Cross Country Invitational. The race begins at 6 p.m.
