Box Score Baseball Takes Series from High Point with 10-2 Win More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (7-13, 2-1 Big South) scored nine runs from the second thru the fourth innings in defeating High Point University (8-18, 1-2 Big South) 10-2 March 19 in Conway, S.C. Coastal won two of three games from the Panthers and have now won 15 straight Big South series dating back to 2004.
High Point took a 1-0 lead on Randy Schwartz’ first home run of the season in the second inning. Coastal would match that in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) doubled down the right field line to open the frame. He then moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Bubba O’Donnell. Baldridge would score on a one-out single from classmate Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell).
The Chanticleers would put up three runs in the third with two outs. Junior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) walked and scored on another double to right by Baldridge. After a walk to junior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll), junior Josh Eachues (Newberry, S.C./Newberry) hit a chopper up the middle for a single that scored Baldrdige. Martin then drove in his second run of the game with a single to left center that plated Duggan.
In the fourth, Coastal scored five runs with the help of five High Point walks. Senior DJ Burns (Lynn, Mass./Chandler Gilbert J.C.) walked to open the inning. He went to second on a single by senior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.) Junior Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State) moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt and Mariotti brought the lead runner home on a single to center. High Point loaded the bases on a Baldridge walk. HPU reliever Zach Zupan came in and struck out Duggan, but walked senior Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.), Martin and junior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) to make it 8-1. Burns was then hit by a pitch to score Coastal’s ninth run.
High Point put up a run in the eighth as an infield single from Chris Norwood scored Dustin Holtzman. Coastal scored its final run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Baldridge that scored freshman David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham).
On the mound, freshman Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) earned the win, going 6.1 innings of one-run, five-strikeout baseball. Fleet improved to 1-1 on the year. The loss fell to O’Donnell, who gave up four runs and six hits in three innings.
Martin, Mariotti and Baldridge had two hits apiece for the Chanticleers. Martin drove in three, while Baldridge scored three runs and drove in a pair. High Point was led by Schwartz, who had three hits. Holtzman was 2-for-3 for the day for the Panthers.
Coastal outhit High Point 11-10, but the Panthers left 14 runners on base.
Coastal travels to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., to take on the College of Charleston Tuesday, March 21 at 5 p.m.
NOTES: Peacher extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the fifth... Coastal has scored 27 runs in the last two games played on Sunday... Baldridge tied a career high in runs scored while Martin tied a career best in RBI.
