The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (7-14) managed eight hits off the 28th-ranked College of Charleston (18-4), but left 11 men on base in a 3-1 loss March 21 at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.   The College of Charleston struck first with a run in the bottom of the third.  Joey Friddle led off the inning with a single up the middle.  He moved to second on a sacrifice by Phillip Coker.  Oliver Marmol then brought Friddle home with another single up the middle.   In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars’ Matt Kirkpatrick hit a two-out single to left field, scoring Ben Lasater and giving CofC a 2-0 lead.  Lasater reached base by doubling to right field.   The Chanticleers answered with one run in the fifth.  Sophomore Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) opened the inning with a single to right.  After a fielder’s choice by junior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.), senior DJ Burns (Lynn, Mass./Chandler Gilbert J.C.) walked.  A fielder’s choice from senior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.) put runners on first and third and junior Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State) brought Vrable home with a single just past the second baseman.  The hit extended Peacher’s hitting streak to 14 games.   In the bottom of the fifth, Larry Cobb singled home Coker to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead that would stand.   Vrable and senior Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.) had two hits apiece for Coastal.  For the College of Charleston, Marmol and Lasater had two hits apiece.   Junior Andy DeLaGarza (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) took the loss, going the first four innings, giving up six hits, two runs and two walks.  Senior Kevin Salmon (Brentwood, N.Y./Briarcliffe C.C.) pitched the final four innings, striking out four and giving up three hits and one run.   Quinn Monsma earned the win for the Cougars, who have now won six games in a row.  He struck out four in 2.1 innings.   Coastal hosts Savannah State University Wednesday, March 22 at 4 p.m., in a game not originally on the 2006 schedule.
