Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Charleston Southern

More Information:

The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (10-15, 4-2 Big South) split a Big South doubleheader with Charleston Southern University (10-19, 4-5 Big South) March 25 in North Charleston, S.C.  The Chanticleers won the first game 5-3 and fell in the nightcap 9-5.  Coastal now has won 16 straight Big South series. Coastal scored two runs in the first inning of game one.  Charleston Southern starter Ryan Sowers walked junior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) and classmate Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State).  Raber scored on a single by junior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.).  The Chanticleers loaded the bases on a single from junior Matt Sutton (La Grange, N.C./UNC Wilmington) and Peacher scored on a single up the middle by senior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.).   In the fifth, the Chants used some two-out magic to plate a run.  Mariotti reached on an error and came all the way around from first on a double from Sutton.   Fleet faced the minimum until the sixth, when Sean Doherty and Ryan Smart opened the frame with infield singles.  Mark Perry tried to sacrifice both runners over, but Fleet threw away his attempt to get the runner at third, allowing Doherty to score.  Smart was then thrown out at the plate.  Wes Brundbridge singled Perry to third, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.  Justin Fyle then singled home Perry with a single to right, cutting the Chant advantage to 3-2.  Senior Kevin Salmon (Brentwood, N.Y./Briarcliffe C.C.) got Anthony Hayes to line out to end the threat.   Coastal earned both runs back in the eighth.  Verrett singled and moved to third on a wild pitch. After a Fuentes walk, sophomore Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) singled to left field to score Verrett.  A sacrifice put runners on second and third and Raber brought Fuentes home on an opposite field single.   Charleston Southern scored a run in the eighth on a Fyle RBI single, but junior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) made a great play on a David Perkins blooper to prevent further damage.  Mariotti then struck out two in the ninth to record his first save and give the Chants their third win in a row.
Fleet earned the win, going 5.2 innings, giving up six hits and no earned runs while striking out one.  The loss went to Sowers, who went six innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs.   Every Coastal starter had at least one hit, with Sutton, Verrett and Martin garnering two hits apiece.  Fyle was 3-for-4 for CSU and Doherty and Smart had two hits apiece.   Charleston Southern struck first in the second game, scoring an unearned run in the second.  With one out, Doherty singled to left.  Smart sacrificed the runner over, but freshman Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) threw wild to first, allowing Smart to score.   Coastal answered with three in the top of the third with the help of two extra-base hits.  Vrable singled, went to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a sacrifice by Raber.  He then scored on a triple to right by Sappelt.  A walk to Peacher was followed by a passed ball that scored Sappelt.  Coastal then made it 3-1 on a double from freshman David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll).   The Chants used smart baserunning to put up a pair in the fourth.  With one out and runners on first and second, Raber grounded to first, who touched the bag for the out.  He got Vrable in a run down, but Martin headed home.  CSU’s Hayes’ throw home was wild and the Chants led 4-1.  Sappelt then brought Vrable home with a single up the middle.   CSU tied the game at five in the fourth.  Keith Stewart singled and moved to third on a double from Doherty.  A groundout from Smart brought Stewart home.  Mark Perry singled to score Doherty, making it 5-3.  Wes Brundridge walked and both runners scored on a double from Justin Fyle.   The Buccaneers took the lead in the sixth, scoring three runs off Salmon.  Perry led the inning with a single. After a flyout, Fyle hit a grounder to first and beat the throw.  Hayes brought Perry home with a single and Perkins had the big hit, a double down the left field line to score a pair.  CSU then scored a run in the seventh as Brundridge singled over Anderson’s head to score Doherty.   Salmon took the loss in relief, going three innings and giving up six hits and four runs.  Gagg went the first 3.1 innings, striking out three and giving up four earned runs.  Charleston Southern’s Josh Evans earned the wins, giving up two earned runs in six innings.  Ryan Rowland picked up his first save by going a scoreless last three innings.
Sappelt had four hits and two RBI in the game, while Anderson was 3-for-5.  For CSU, Fyle and Doherty had three hits apiece.   Coastal travels to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern University Wednesday, March 29 at 4 p.m.
