Oberson Wins the 5,000-Meters at the Duke Twilight More Information:
DURHAM, N.C. – In cold and damp conditions at the Duke Twilight, Coastal Carolina freshman distance runner Estelle Oberson (Geneva, Switzerland/Emilie-Gourd) won the 5,000-meters to lead the Lady Chanticleers on Sunday evening, May 7 in Durham, N.C.
Oberson set a personal best in running the 5,000-meters in a time of 17:16.41. For Oberson it was only the second track meet she has competed in this season as she recovered from a fall cross country injury. Fellow freshman distance runner Saskia Janssen (Schwalmtal, Germany/St. Wolfhelm Gymnasium) placed second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:41.30.
Two Coastal throwers competed in the meet as junior Jessica Pressley (Mullins, S.C./Mullins) placed second, but was the first collegiate competitor, in the hammer with her throw of 54.60m/179'2". Junior Jamie Mushatt-Valrie (Strafford, Va./Brooke Point) finished third for CCU in the discus, 38.86m/130'9".
Only four Coastal female athletes competed at the meet out of the 12 athletes that traveled due to the safety concerns. The pole vault and high jump were not held at all, while CCU decided to hold out all hurdlers and sprinters because of the slick track.
The Coastal women's program competes in two meets next weekend. The distance runners will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday, May 13. CCU will also send a group of athletes to the North Carolina A&T Last Chance meet to be run May 12-13 in Greensboro, N.C.
