More Information:

CONWAY, S.C.-  The Coastal Carolina baseball team picked up its third straight win in the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament after defeating the seventh-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 3-2.  The win puts Coastal at a perfect 3-0 in its season-opening tournament.

Virginia opened up the game with its first batter, Greg Miclat reaching on the one and only Coastal error of the day.  Miclat then went on to score the first run of the game on a fielders choice before Coastal caught a Cavalier trying to steal third base to get out of the inning.  The Chanticleers picked up a hit from David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) in their first at-bat but the other Chanticleers had some trouble figuring out Virginia ace Matt Packer, who got his first start in as a Cavalier.  Packer pitched four-in-a-half innings for Virginia, giving up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

Coastal got a run on the board late in the third inning when Sappelt scored off of a single from designated hitter David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and then took the lead at the bottom of the fifth inning when senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) jacked a shot over the left field wall for his first homerun of the season.  The Cavaliers then brought in relief pitcher Andrew Carraway who got the last out of the inning off of a fielders choice.

Coastal's ace John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Chaminade College (Gulf Coast C.C.)) pitched a strong six innings for the Chants, not allowing another run by Virginia until the sixth inning when David Adams scored off of a Jeremy Farrell single to center field.  Virginia made their move in the sixth getting two hits off of Mariotti, who got himself out of the inning with bases loaded.  Anderson came in to pitch in the seventh, striking out two Cavaliers and getting the third out off of a fly ball to center field.

The Chanticleers came out swinging in the seventh as they faced Jake Rule on the mound.  Rule, however, couldn't stop the hot stick of Raber who went deep for the second time in the game hitting another homerun over the left field fence.  Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra (James Madison)) then came in to pitch for the Chanticleers where he got three quick outs from the three batters that he faced.

Coastal looked like they were going to put more runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth after singles from Matt Rademacher (Bay City, Mich./Central (Michigan)) and Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill). Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) then put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, placing Rademacher at third and Baldridge on second.  Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) then laid another sacrifice bunt down, which caught Rademacher in a pickle, getting the out at the plate.  Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) got hit by a pitch, putting another three runners on the base-path for Coastal but the Chants couldn't capitalize a run, leaving them stranded.

Anderson then moved to his third position of the night, taking over first base for Raber as Risser stayed on the mound and struck out the next two Virginia batters he faced.  The Chanticleers sealed the deal on the win with MiClat grounding out to second base for the Cavaliers.

Coastal was led by Sappelt and Raber who each went 2-for-4 on the day while Martin went 2-for-3.  Anderson picked up his first win on the mound in the 2007 season getting a little help from Risser who picked up the save.  Rule took the loss for the Cavaliers who were led by Adams who went 2-for-3.

The Chanticleers are back in action on Tuesday, weather permitting, against the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m.  Virginia heads back home to Charlottesville to take on the Lancers of Longwood on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
