Box Score Baseball Drops Tough 4-3 Loss at High Point More Information:
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (28-7, 6-1 Big South) lost its fourth straight one-run game, a 4-3 loss to High Point (19-18, 6-4 Big South) April 13 in High Point’s first-ever night game.
Coastal jumped out early with two runs in the first. Senior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) reached on a three-base error by High Point’s Pable Rosario. He would come home on a double from senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall). HPU’s Eammon Portice walked junior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) and sophomore Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) to load the bases. Raber then came home on a Portice balk.
High Point came right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Jeff Cowan reached on an infield single. He went to second on a single from Bill Manion. Both runners stole a base and Cowan scored on a throwing error by senior Matt Rademacher (Bay City, Mich./Michigan). Manion then came home on a single off senior Andy DeLaGarza’s (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) glove by Billy Alvino. Chris Norwood brought Alvino home on a triple and Norwood scored on a single up the middle by Eric Marion.
Coastal had an opportunity to score in the fourth as Rademacher singled, Doyle walked and junior Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Portice settled down and struck out sophomore Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and senior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) to end the inning.
Coastal cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth. Sophomore David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) reached on a Portice error. Duggan then reached on a bunt down the first base line. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice from Raber. Sappelt scored on a fly ball to left by Rademacher.
Coastal got out of further trouble in the eighth as Bortnick made a great stop on a single by Rosario, then got Billy Alvino in a run down to end the inning.
Freshman Ricky Grice (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) reached on a single to open the ninth and moved to second on a Sappelt sacrifice, but a flyout and a groundout ended the game.
DeLaGarza was charged with his first loss of the season. He went seven-plus innings, allowing 12 hits, four runs and three strikeouts. Portice struck out 11 Chants to go with four hits and five walks. He did not allow an earned run. Tom Boleska pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Raber had a double and an RBI for Coastal, while Alvino had three hits for the Panthers.
Coastal and High Point will resume the three-game series Saturday, April 14, at 12 p.m. The time of the game was changed due to impending severe weather in the High Point area.
