Women's Soccer Falls to Winthrop 1-0

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (9-5, 5-2 Big South) lost at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field for the first time in 2008, as the Chanticleers fell to Winthrop (7-8, 3-3 Big South) 1-0 Oct. 17.
Winthrop used a first-half goal and six saves from Dimitra Poulos to improve to 3-3 on the year in the Big South.
Coastal Carolina had two great looks in the first half, as junior
Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and senior
Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had their shots saved by Poulos in the ninth and 18
th minutes, respectively.
Winthrop got on the board at 22:10 as Tricia Vensel picked up an attempted Coastal Carolina clear and fired in the left corner for her first goal of the season.
Coastal Carolina outshot Winthrop 11-3 in the first half and had a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks. Poulos made four saves for the Eagles in the first 45 minutes.
Coastal Carolina had four shots in the second half compared to Winthrop's three, with the best look coming from Chanticleer senior
Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) in the 75
th minute. Her shot was saved by Poulos and the rebound was free for a second but picked up by the Winthrop goalkeeper.
Coastal Carolina finished the game with a 15-6 shot advantage. Both teams had four corner kicks. Sophomore
Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had three second-half saves, while Poulos finished with her six stops. Monroe led the Chants with four shots, while Vensel and Courtney Durbin had two shots apiece for the Eagles. Coastal Carolina is now 3-1 at home this season with two home matches remaining.
Coastal Carolina will host VMI Friday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. It is Senior Night at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. Winthrop is at Charleston Southern Oct. 20 at 3 p.m.
