Men's and Women's Outdoor Track Gets Five NCAA Regional Qualifiers at CCU Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's outdoor track squads continued their seasons Friday and Saturday, hosting the CCU Invitational. Four Coastal athletes attained NCAA Regional qualifying marks in five events at the meet.

Four of the five regional qualifiers were on the women's side, beginning with senior Amber Campbell's (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) school and Big South record-setting mark of 65.35m/214'5" in the hammer throw on Friday. Campbell also qualified in the discus on Saturday, throwing a distance of 48.61m/159'6".

Freshman Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) also hit a qualifying distance in the triple jump with 12.08m/39'7.5". Senior Marilyn Testa (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) broke the school pole vault record and also earned a spot at the regional meet, clearing 3.80m/12'5.5".

Freshman Daneja Grandovec (Maribor, Slovenia/Gimnasija Maribor) rounded out the women's qualifiers, winning the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:55.54.

On the men's side, freshman Thomas Jordan (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) threw the javelin 67.80m/222'5" to record his second straight regional mark after setting new school and conference records last week at the Shamrock Invitational.

Johnson also won the women's long jump, and freshman Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Coffeyville J.C.) won the shot put competition with a throw of 13.38m/43'10.5".

Other men's winners included senior Jacob Simatwa (Endebess, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)) with a 800m time of 1:53.05 and sophomore Nelson Oliveira (Coimbra, Portugal/Quinta das Flores), rounding out a 1-2-3 CCU finish in the 1,500m with a time of 3:55.39. Junior Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) won the 400m hurdles in 54.01, and Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Claflin College) won the triple jump with a distance of 14.21m/46'7.5".

Both teams travel to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays, March 26 and 27.
