Women's Soccer Earns Dramatic 3-2 Win over Liberty

CONWAY, S.C. – Sophomore Anny Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) made her first-ever goal at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium a memorable one, as her strike from over 20 yards out with 14 seconds left gave the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (7-3, 3-0 Big South) a dramatic 3-2 win over Liberty (0-8-1, 0-3 Big South) Oct. 3 in Conway, S.C. Coastal Carolina extended its winning streak to seven games, which ties a school record set last season.   The Chanticleers had the only goal of the first half, as senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) took a pass from junior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and beat Liberty goalkeeper Karen Blocker for a 1-0 advantage. It was Gunning’s fourth goal of the season and was Teijelo’s second assist of the year. The goal came at 21:27 as the Chanticleers went into halftime with the one-goal lead.   Coastal Carolina held a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half and attempted three corner kicks to Liberty’s two. Blocker had three first-half saves, while Liberty did not attempt a shot on goal.   Senior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) then struck at 48:32 as she took a pass from sophomore Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) in the box and beat Blocker to make it 2-0 Chanticleers. Monroe is now tied with Bobbie Parsons on the Coastal Carolina career goals scored list with 38. Liberty would make it 2-1 as Amy Oberlin’s shot from about 10 yards out went in the right corner at 61:08, cutting the Coastal Carolina advantage to one. It was Oberlin’s second goal of the year. Coastal Carolina had two breakaway chances to extend its lead but the Lady Flames thwarted the opportunities. Then, with just over six minutes left, Liberty’s Maggie Woody struck a free kick that got past sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) in the right corner to tie the game at 2-2. It looked as if the game was going into overtime, but in the closing seconds, freshman Jessie Benchley (Hudson, Ill./Normal Community West) sent a ball into the box, which a Liberty defender cleared. The ball went right to Tupy, whose shot went in the upper right corner for the game-winner. It was Tupy’s second goal of the season and second game-winning goal.   Coastal Carolina outshot Liberty 20-13 on the night, with both teams coming up with four corner kicks. Blocker had eight saves in net for the Lady Flames, while Haggard stopped three shots. Tupy and Monroe led Coastal Carolina with four shots, while Oberlin had five strikes for Liberty.   Coastal Carolina is back in action Tuesday, Oct. 7 at home against UNC Asheville. Game time is at 4 p.m. Liberty is at Francis Marion Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.
