Men's Tennis Loses to Gardner-Webb, 4-3 More Information:
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team fell to Gardner-Webb 4-3 Saturday, Feb. 23 at the City of Myrtle Beach Tennis Center.
The Chanticleers (4-6) lost the doubles point as Gardner-Webb (5-5) won at both No.1 and No. 2 doubles. Evgeny Slesarev and Carlos Quijano defeated sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville) 8-6 in the No. 1 slot, while Andrew Veeder and Grant Vanrensburg won 8-6 over senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201). Meanwhile, junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) came away with a 9-7 victory over Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor at No. 3 doubles.
Ramos, Mellis and Tzvetkov all registered wins in singles competition. Ramos topped Veeder 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Mellis topped Fafael Altmayer 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 slot. Tzvetkov beat Quijano 6-1, 6-1 at No 4 singles. However, Gardner-Webb came away with three singles victories. Slesarev defeated Vlaskin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Vanrensburg topped Withers 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot. Taylor Ferrier defeated freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Coastal returns to action Sunday, Feb. 24 when the Chants host Liberty at the City of Myrtle Beach Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
