MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team snapped a six-match losing skid on Sunday, Feb. 24 with a 6-1 victory over Liberty at the City of Myrtle Beach Tennis Center.
"Today's win is a great start to the next phase of our season," Head Coach Chris Powers said. "We still have some team-building to do with a lot of room to improve. I know our best tennis is ahead and we are looking forward to our road trip next weekend."
Coastal (5-6, 1-1 Big South) swept all three doubles matches from the Flames (1-4, 0-2 Big South). Sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) beat Rafael Riso and Sebastian Pena 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201) topped Chad Simpson and Juan Reyes 8-4 in the No. 2 slot. Junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory over Jarda Trojan and Leandro Schujmann at No. 3 doubles.
The Chanticleers had five wins in the singles competition. Vlaskin came away with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Pena at No.1 singles, while Mellis topped Simpson 6-1, 7-6 in the No. 2 slot. Tzvetkov defeated Riso 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Withers had a 6-4, 6-4 win over Schujmann at the No. 5 slot, while Hairston claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Reyes at No. 6 singles. Liberty's only point of the match came as Trojan defeated Ramos 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.
CCU returns to action Friday, Feb. 29 at Richmond. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
