st-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (22-6) scored five runs in the middle three innings and got a quality relief appearance from junior
David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) in a 9-4 win over Wake Forest (12-15) April 2 at Hooks Stadium. Coastal got off on the right foot in the first, scoring three runs. Freshman
Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) led off with a bunt single. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior
Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) then traded places with Woodward, reaching on a run-scoring double to right. Junior
David Sappelt (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) would reach on an error, putting runners on second and third. Anderson brought in both runners with a double down the right field line. The Demon Deacons came back with a run in the bottom of the first. Ben Terry walked to open the frame. He went to second on a Willy Fox walk. Allen Dykstra then singled to center to score Terry. Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) induced Weldon Woodall into a double play. Wake tied the game in the fourth. Ian Tomkins and Ben Terry walked to open the inning. Doyle picked off Tomkins at second for the first out, but Steven Brooks singled up the middle to put two Demon Deacons on base. Wheeler would get Fox to pop out, but he would walk Dykstra. Woodall then made Wheeler pay with a two-run single through the left side. Coastal made it 5-3 in the fourth, scoring two runs with two outs. Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was hit by a pitch. Wake’s Ben Hunter would strike out the next two hitters, but Woodward and Doyle would come through with back-to-back run-scoring singles. The Chanticleers added a run in the fifth as Bortnick doubled over Fox’s head, scoring senior
Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill), who singled to open the inning. In the sixth, Woodward walked with one out and went to third on a single from Doyle. Sappelt hit a grounder to first that Evan Ocheltree went home, but Woodward beat the low throw, making it 7-3 Coastal. Baldridge then singled home Doyle for his second hit of the day. Wake cut the lead to 8-4 in the seventh as Mike Murray, who came into the game as a defensive replacement, hit a home run to right field. Sophomore
Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) brought in Anderson with the ninth run of the game as he singled up the middle in a pinch hitting role. Anderson earned the win in relief, striking out three in 4.1 innings. Wheeler went 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, three runs to go along with two strikeouts. Freshman
Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) struck out two in the eighth, while junior
Pete Andrelczyk (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) struck out a batter in the ninth. Coastal held the Demon Deacons to just six hits on the day. Hunter took the loss, giving up nine hits and four earned runs in five innings. Doyle and Anderson had three hits and two RBI apiece for the Chants in the win. Woodward added two runs and two hits, while Baldridge was 2-for-5. For Wake Forest, Woodall drove in two runs. Coastal will begin a three-game series against Big South rival Winthrop Friday, April 4 at 6 p.m., in Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
