Oct. 16, 2009

Box Score

CLINTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (4-10-2, 2-2-1 Big South) tied Presbyterian (3-8-1, 0-3-1 Big South) Oct. 16 in Clinton, S.C. The Chanticleers scored two first-half goals in a dense fog, but the Blue Hose scored twice in the second half to force Coastal's second tie of the season.

Coastal Carolina took a 2-0 halftime advantage as senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) and junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored goals for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina outshot Presbyterian 12-4 in the first half and had a chance to score early as sophomore Marissa Terry's (Charleston, S.C./James Island) shot was just wide right at 12:05. Gentile scored her eighth goal of the season as Tupy controlled in the midfield, then past to the forward, who shot from around 10 yards out at 30:51. Tupy then scored on an unassisted goal at 37:37 when she took a cross from sophomore Tori Strengari (Newark, Del./St. Mark's), then beat a Blue Hose defender for her third goal of the season. Presbyterian's best chance to score happened at 35:36 when Megan Fragapane's shot was saved by junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain).

Haggard had the one save in the first 45 minutes, while Presbyterian's Abby Young stopped two shots. Both team had one corner kick in the first half, while Coastal Carolina was called for offsides six times.

Presbyterian would score two goals in the second half to tie the game. Both Blue Hose goals would come off corner kicks. At 55:46, Kate Hunter scored on a cross from Stephanie Aaron. It was her first goal of the season. Then at 79:58, Britney Horton shot off a cross. It was saved off the line by senior Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Loyola (Ill.)), but Hunter would get the rebound for her second goal of the game.

The best chance at a goal in the overtime came at 95:52, when it looked as if Gentile scored the game-winner, but she was called offsides. Presbyterian also had a good look in the second overtime, as Tricia Bryan's shot was just wide left.

Coastal Carolina outshot Presbyterian 22-13, with Gentile leading the way with six shots. Fragapane led Presbyterian with four shots. The Blue Hose had a 6-4 corner-kick advantage.

Haggard had four saves in the tie, while Presbyterian's Sarah Beth Anderson had seven saves. There also were five yellow cards in the match.
