CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team fired a school-record 285 in the final round to take the team title at the 2009 Wendy's Invitational, Oct. 19-20. The two-day, 36-hole tournament, hosted by Charleston Southern University, was played at Coosaw Creek Country Club (Par 71 - 5,898 yards) in Charleston, S.C.
The Chanticleers broke a school-record with a 1-over par 285 in the second round to finish at 18-over 586, also a team 36-hole record, for the tournament, 19 shots ahead of runner-up College of Charleston at 605. Memphis was third at 614, with Winthrop (627) and Carson-Newman (629) rounding out the top five. Three other Big South schools were also in the field, with Charleston Southern placing seventh at 641, Presbyterian in 10th at 668 and High Point in 13th at 678.
Senior Aruka Felgueroso broke the school record for a single round with a 5-under 66 to shoot a 36-hole total of 2-under 140 to win medalist honors. Her 66 broke the school mark she previously shared with Ann Maness by two shots while the 140 total ties the school record for a two-round event, originally set by Morgan O'Banion at the 2002 Lady Catamount Intercollegiate. Freshman Jessica Alexander posted her second top-five and third top-15 finish of the fall, placing third at 5-over 147. Junior Alicia Grier tied for fourth at 6-over 148, while junior Carmen Jones had her best collegiate finish, placing ninth at 9-over 151 after a final round 72. Freshman Brittany Henderson rounded out the team scoring at 162, tying for 31st. Playing individually, freshmen Tatum Briele (162) and Taylor Slagle (171) tied for 31st and 53rd, respectively.
"I am so very proud of everyone in this one and how they come together, especially in the second round," Head Coach Katie Quinney said. "We knew that College of Charleston would be tough and with the way we played today, we made it very hard on them. Aruka's round was outstanding and could have been even better if a couple more putts had fallen, which is a tribute to how well she was hitting it. Overall, I couldn't ask for a better way to wrap up the fall."
The Chants have ended their fall slate and will open the spring season Sun.-Tue., Feb. 14-16 at the Qdoba Classic at Don Shula's Miami Lakes Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla.
