CONWAY, S.C. - Two goals from senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) lifted the Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (6-11-2, 4-3-1 Big South) to a 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb (11-8, 5-3 Big South) Oct. 29 in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers won their third home game of the season, while winning their third straight game against the Bulldogs.
Coastal Carolina outshot Gardner-Webb 7-2 in a scoreless first half. The best look for the Chants came in the second minute as Gentile shot from the left side 10 yards out was saved by Samantha Rupert. Both Gardner-Webb shots were saved by junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain), while Rupert had three stops in the first 45 minutes.
The Chanticleers got on the scoreboard at 47:20 as sophomore Marissa Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) crossed in the box to junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison). She then passed to Gentile for her 10th goal of the season. Gentile scored her 11th goal of the campaign at 71:43 as Terry passed to senior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), who fed the senior forward for her third multi-goal game of the season. Gentile's 11 goals also tied for fourth in Coastal Carolina's single-season record book. Gardner-Webb had its best two chances to score late as Haggard saved a Jane Geisler shot over the crossbar at 79:27, then Michelle Jenkins hit the crossbar at 79:50.
Coastal Carolina outshot Gardner-Webb 15-7, while the Bulldogs had a 3-2 corner-kick advantage. Gentile led the Chants with four shots, while Stephanie Benshoof had three shots to lead the Bulldogs.
Haggard had three saves for her 18th career shutout, while Gardner-Webb's Samantha Rupert had seven saves in defeat.
Coastal Carolina will host Senior Day Saturday, Oct. 31 against Winthrop. Game time is at 2 p.m. The Chants will honor Corie Coles (Pilesgrove, N.J./Lynchburg College), Gentile, Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Loyola (Ill.)) and Teijelo before the match. Gardner-Webb is at Charleston Southern the same day at 7 p.m. in Blackbaud Stadium.
