More Information:

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (21-7) used two solo home runs in the fifth and then held on to defeat UNC Wilmington (17-7) 3-2 April 1 in Wilmington, N.C. Coastal Carolina sweeps the two-game midweek series over the Seahawks.   Sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) manufactured Coastal Carolina’s first run in the top of the third. He singled to left, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to right sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton).    The Seahawks tied the game at one in the bottom of the frame. Mike Holt singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mike Rooney and scored on a single by Ben Thielsen.   Both teams had good scoring chances in the fourth. For Coastal Carolina, junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) doubled to the gap in right field that looked to score junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.), but the Seahawks had a perfect relay to home plate to tag him out at home. Then in the bottom of the fourth, UNC Wilmington loaded the bases with one out, but Holt hit into an inning-ending double play.   The Chants used a couple of solo home runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led off the inning with a blast to left field. Two batters later, Noel went deep to left center field for a two-run Chanticleer advantage.   The Seahawks rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Tyler Stott walked to open the inning. He moved to second on a groundout by Rhett Miller and scored on a double from Mike Rooney. UNC Wilmington had runners on second and third with two outs, but freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard, Md./Riverdale Baptist) struck out Grayson Evans to end the game.   Gagg improved to 3-2 on the year, pitching 7.2 innings and giving up eight hits and one run with four strikeouts. Winegardner earned his first save of the season after getting the 27th out via strikeout. The loss fell to Justin Bradley, who gave up seven hits and three runs in 5.1 innings.   Noel went 3-for-3 with two runs-batted-in and a home run. Rice and Iglesias added two hits apiece. For UNCW, Thielsen and Andrew Cain went 2-for-4 at the plate.   Coastal Carolina returns to Conway, S.C., to host Gardner-Webb in a three-game Big South series. The first game will be Friday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
