CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (1-8) fell in its 2009 home opener to The Citadel (3-3) 1-0 Sept. 15 in Conway, S.C. Despite having a 19-7 shot advantage and 13 corner kicks, it was a goal in the ninth minute that gave the Bulldogs the one-goal advantage.
The Citadel struck at 8:31 as Amy Loughran scored her fifth goal of the season, a shot from five yards out with an assist from Dianna Martin. Coastal Carolina had two great chances to equalize the game in the first half, but could not connect. Senior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) hit the post with a header at 13:50. Senior Corie Coles (Pilesgrove, N.J./Lynchburg College) then hit the crossbar with a shot at 44:26 and the game remained 1-0 going into halftime.
Coastal Carolina had an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half and had all six corner kicks. The Citadel's Whitney Nave had three saves, while junior Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) stopped one shot.
Coastal Carolina kept the attack going in the second half. Gentile's shot at 57:30 was saved by a Bulldog defender. Senior Sarah McPartlan's (Crystal Lake, Ill./Loyola Ill.) 25-yard shot was tipped by Nave right at the top of the goal at 69:49. Coastal Carolina had 11 shots and seven corner kicks in the second half but could not come up with the tying goal.
Teijelo led Coastal Carolina with four shots, while junior Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and Gentile had three shots apiece. Haggard had three saves for Coastal Carolina, while Nave had her second shutout of the season with seven saves.
Nicole Martinoli led The Citadel with three shots, while the Bulldogs defeated Coastal Carolina for the first time in seven tries.
Coastal Carolina will host East Carolina Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
