Final Stats
CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team overcame a one goal deficit, scoring three goals in a five-minute span in the second half, to down UNC Asheville, 4-1, in the Chanticleers' final home game of the season.
In a game that Coastal (8-7-1, 4-2-0, Big South) dominated statistically, it was the Bulldogs (1-11-0, 0-5-0, Big South) that found themselves up early off the boot of Ferriss Roberts. Roberts took a pass from Frances Staelin and fired a shot from 22 yards out that bounced once inside the Coastal six and off the far post before finding the back of the net.
The score would be the only tally of the half as UNC Asheville took the 1-0 lead at the break.
The Chants responded early and often in the second half; matching their season-high goal output of four in the second 45-minute frame. First to strike for the home team and even the scoreboard was freshman Katie Wahl at the 13:21 mark in the half. Wahl bypassed the Bulldogs net minder and fired home the tying goal from eight yards out to the far post. The goal was Wahl's first of her collegiate career.
Freshman forward Christina Stern was responsible for the eventual game winner in the 61st minute of the contest. Stern blew past a defender and faced a one-on-one with the keeper as she shot the ball from four yards out inside the near post. The shot was Stern's only one of the day and marked her second goal of the season.
Collecting Coastal's third goal on the evening, and first in her career, was junior Julia Baldwin. Baldwin netted her goal into an open net as the UNC Asheville keeper had come out of the net to deflect a shot. Baldwin gathered in the rebound and slotted it home to put the Chants up 3-1 with 26:59 remaining in the game.
Kate Wilkinson tacked on Coastal's final goal in the 81st minute with a shot from seven yards out that found the back of the net. Collecting her first career assist on the goal was freshman Amanda Clark.
Chanticleer goal keep Jessica Barton finished the day with three saves with her last being an impressive dive to deflect the ball harmlessly over the crossbar.
"This was a good win for us today," said head coach Tammy DeCesare. "The team fought hard and kept their composure after falling behind early to battle back and claim a hard-fought conference victory. It is difficult for any team to play three games in six days and not be defeated in any of them, but we were able to do it because of the hard work and desire of this team. Now we have to keep working hard and prepare for our match up with Charleston Southern."
The Chants finished the match with a 17-7 advantage in shots, a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, and out cornered UNC Asheville by three.
With the win Coastal runs its unbeaten streak to three and breaks above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Chanticleers will start their season-ending road trip on Firday, Oct. 22 as they visit Big South leader Charleston Southern. Kick off for the contest is set for 7 p.m.
