CONWAY - Coastal Carolina, down 31-7 at halftime, trimmed its deficit to 10, but was forced to go for it late in its own territory and Stony Brook capitalized for the 38-28 victory Saturday at Brooks Stadium, spoiling Coastal's comeback attempt and Homecoming.

Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet rushed for a career-high 193 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Seawolves' ground attack. Quarterback Michael Coulter finished 15-for-21 for 133 yards.
Eric O'Neal led the way for the Chanticleers on the ground and finished the evening with 71 yards rushing, while Marquel Willis hauled in 53 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Coastal quarterback Zach MacDowall threw for 103 yards and hit 13-of-24 passes to go along with 30 yards rushing and a touchdown before leaving with an injury.

Stony Brook took the opening kickoff and drove 72 yards in eight plays, four rushing and 4-of-4 passing. Maysonet finished the drive with a four-yard rushing score. After a punt by Coastal on its first drive, Maysonet broke a 78-yard run to the two on the first play of the series, marking the third-longest rush by a CCU opponent. Two plays later, Brook Jackolski scored from two yards out, putting the Seawolves up 14-0.

Stony Brook made it a 17-point game to start the second as Wesley Skiffington made a 43-yard field goal. On Coastal's first play after the ensuing kickoff, the Chants fumbled and Roosevelt Kirk recovered on the CCU 1. Maysonet opened the drive with a 14-yard run and on the next play carried the ball from five yards out, putting SBU up 24-0.

The Seawolves kept the throttle down. After forcing a punt, Coulter hit Michael Lepore for a 33-yard gain. Maysonet looked to be stopped for a short gain on the following play, but spun out of a tackle for a 31-yard scored and a 31-0 advantage for SBU.

On the ensuing kickoff, Niccolo Mastromatteo returned the ball 53 yards to the SBU 38, marking the fourth-longest kick return in school history. The Chanticleers were moving the ball until a MacDowall pass was broken up at the seven and picked off by Craig Richardson at the seven.

Coastal's defense was able to hold the Seawolves and Mastromatteo returned a punt 21 yards to the SBU 29. Coastal got an eight-yard completion, an eight-yard run and an eight-yard run before moving to the two yards line on a penalty. MacDowall later put Coastal on the scoreboard with a one-yard plunge over the top of the pile, making the score 31-7.

To start the third quarter, Mastromatteo returned the opening kickoff 28 yards to near midfield. MacDowall and O'Neal steadily moved to the ball downfield, including a 14-yard run to the SBU one. True freshman Aaron Jones then found paydirt. The Chanticleers went for two and made the score 31-15 as MacDowall converted the try.

The Chants forced a punt on the ensuing Seawolves drive and were backed up to their eight. After MacDowall left the game after an incompletion, Coastal was in punt formation with Ben Erdman keeping the ball on a fake for a first down. On the next play, O'Neal weaved his way downfield for a season-long 40-yard run. Three plays later, Hillary avoided the rush and hit Willis in the left corner of the endzone for a 24-yard TD - Hillary's first passing TD of his career - trimming the CCU deficit to 10, 31-21.

With just over five minutes to play, Coastal went for on fourth down from its own six, but could not convert. On the next play, Jackolski out-ran the CCU defense for the six-yard score and a 38-21 score.

The Chanticleers put together one last scoring drive to once again pull within 10 points after Hillary orchestrated a 30-yard drive. Jeremy Height returned the kickoff 51 yards to give the Chants field position at the Stony Brook 30. Coastal went seven plays capped by a one-yard scamper by Hillary to make the score 38-28.

Coastal followed with an onside kick, but Stony Brook recovered the kick and ran the clock out.

Coastal Carolina will return to the road the next two weeks, facing Gardner-Webb and VMI. The Chants will play at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 30 at 1:30 pm, then head to VMI the following week (Nov. 6) also at 1:30 pm.
