KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team turned in a second place finish Tuesday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate from the Oak Point Golf Club.
It is the second time this season the Chanticleers have finished in the top two of a tournament, as Coastal opened the fall season by winning the Jacksonville University Labor Day Shootout on Sept. 6.
The two-day event began Monday with the first two rounds of the tournament, and Coastal stood in third place at the conclusion of the day with rounds of 295 and 287. The Chanticleers finished Tuesday with a score of 298 in the third round and ended the event with a final score of 875 to give Coastal its best score of the fall.
Kennesaw State captured the team title with an overall score of 875 (282-298-295), while Campbell (299-284-303=886), Kansas (296-296-295=887), Morehead State (293-299-297=889) and the College of Charleston (287-291-311=889) rounded out the top five.
Freshman Courtney Boe finished runner-up after shooting her three lowest rounds of the season. The Bluffton, S.C., native carded an even-par 72 in the opening round and followed that by shooting a one-under par 71 in the final two rounds to finish with a score of 214.
Tuesday was the second time this season Boe has finished in the top two of a tournament. She won the JU Labor Day Shootout earlier in the year with a score of 111 in a tournament that covered 27 holes.
Leigh Whittaker of the College of Charleston won the individual title with a score of 205 (67-67-71).
Coastal sophomore Jessica Alexander was second for the Chanticleers and tied for 15th overall with her final score of 222. Alexander opened the event with a 74 in the first round before shooting a one-under par 71 in round two. The Riverview, Fla., native finished with a 77 in the third round to finish in the top-15 for the second straight event.
Senior Alicia Grier finished tied for 18th and carded a final score of 223 after rounds of 73, 71 and 79. Junior Kaitlin Higginbotham moved up five spots on day two and finished tied for 24th following a 75 in the third round en route to a final score of 225. Higginbotham carded a 76 and a 74 in the first two rounds and was tied for 29th after day one of competition.
Sophomore Brittany Henderson improved her finish by 13 places on Tuesday after shooting a 75 in round three and finished tied for 50th overall. Henderson turned in rounds of 84, 75 and 75 en route to a final score of 234.
Coastal Carolina returns to action Nov. 1-2 when the Chanticleers travel to Austin, Texas, to take part in the Challenge at Onion Creek from the Onion Creek Country Club.
