Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Chanticleers Earn 0-0 Draw with Gardner-Webb

Oct. 27, 2010

Final Stats

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- After 90 minutes of regulation and two ten minute overtime periods the scoreboard at the Greene-Harbison Stadium on the campus of Gardner-Webb remained unchanged as the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with Gardner-Webb.

The tie brings Coastal's record to 9-7-2 (5-2-1, Big South) and Gardner-Webb's to 6-8-4 (3-3-2, Big South).

Severe storms rolled through the area and delayed the start of the game by 90 minutes, leaving the field a wet and muddy bog.

The Chants had an opportunity to close out the match in the waning minutes of the second overtime as Hannah Brown lined up for a free kick from 23 yards out and sailed it over the leaping Gardner-Webb defenders and on frame. Unfortunately, the Runnin' Bulldogs keeper was able to get enough of a touch on the ball to deflect it over the crossbar.

Coastal kept persistent pressure on the Runnin' Bulldogs defense as the Chants out shot the home team by five in the second half, forcing the Gardner-Webb keeper to come up with five saves. Coastal had a chance to take a lead late in the period as freshman Amanda Clark was able to bypass the keeper and took a shot toward the open goal that would ultimately be saved by a Gardner-Webb defender.

Goalkeeper Amy Haggard recorded a career high nine saves on the night including a dramatic diving save to her right in the second minute of overtime to keep the game knotted at zeros. Haggard had two consecutive encore performances with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime as she smothered a low lying shot and gobbled up a wayward header that was heading into the net.

Coastal played to a scoreless tie at the half for the tenth time this season. Neither team was able to mount much of an offensive threat through the frame as the sloppy conditions dictated the course of play. Shots through the period were even at eight with corner kicks also being all square at two each.

The Chants best opportunity to score in the first half came after Anna Tupy was fouled just outside the 18 box. Brown lined up the free kick and fired a shot that was just inches to high causing the ball to deflect off and over the crossbar.

The Chanticleers were led by a career high five shots by Brown as the team finished with a 21-19 edge on the night. Both goal keepers finished with nine saves on the night and Gardner-Webb finished with a slight 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Coastal will wrap up the regular season as the team travels to Winthrop on Saturday, Oct. 30 to take on the first place Eagles. Kickoff on the pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
