Final Stats
CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team defeated Liberty 1-0 in a hard fought Big South Conference match-up. The win was the first for the Chants on their home field and first of their Big South Conference schedule this season. With the victory Coastal improves to 5-6-0 (1-1-0, BSC). The loss drops Liberty to 3-7-2 (0-2-0, BSC).
Senior Anna Tupy netted the game winning goal in the 56th minute of the contest to break the scoreless tie. The goal, which was Tupy's third on the season, came after sophomore Morgan Thomas served corner kick into the box where Tupy was able to elevate and head the ball past the Liberty goal keeper.
Tupy's goal was the 13th of her career and moves into a tie for seventh place on the Chanticleers all-time list.
The Chants back line and goal keepers were able to hold an explosive Liberty attack, which has scored 21 goals on the season, scoreless. Additionally, the Coastal defense was able to shut down Liberty's Aimee Luurtsema, who has accounted for 28 shots and eight goals on the season, allowing her to not even take a shot in the game.
The Chanticleers maintained a strong offensive pressure throughout the contest as Liberty was limited to just three possessions in the first ten minutes of the game. While Coastal may have not scored early in the game, the opportunities were there. Thomas was able to break free on several runs down the near sideline early in the game. Those runs resulted in two shots on goal and two corner kicks for the Chants.
Coastal's offensive pressure continued after the intermission as the ladies in white kept the ball in their offensive third for the overwhelming majority of the second half as well. In the second half, the Chants out shot the Flames 6-2 and held a 6-0 advantage in corners.
The shutout was the third on the season by the Chanticleers. Combining for the shutout in goal for the Chants were Jessica Barton (one save) and Amy Haggard (two saves). Statistically the Chants were led by Tupy with three shots, two of which were on goal, and Thomas with two shots and an assist.
"This was a good win for us," said head coach Tammy DeCesare. "To get our first Big South win against a very good Liberty team is a great feeling. This win puts us on a positive foot moving forward on the season and gives the team hope that we may be able to contend for a conference championship this season."
The Chanticleers finished with an edge in every offensive category for the first time this season.
Coastal will return to the road this weekend for a two game road trip to Virginia. The Chants will first take on VMI Friday at 4 p.m. followed by Radford on Sunday at 2 p.m.
