The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team handed Mercer its first loss of the 2010 season, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 10 in Augusta, Ga. The Chanticleers improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Bears fell to a 3-1 mark.
The Chanticleers earned the doubles point when No. 1 doubles team of Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham defeated Evandro Rosindo and David Barton, 8-2, and No. 2 doubles team of Ernesto Ramos and Alex Funkhouser beat Matthew Polean and Fernando Armendaris, 8-5. The No. 3 doubles team of Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov fell to Peter Tauchner and Victor Dias, 8-5.
To start off singles, Barton tied up the match at one for the host Bears by defeating Billingham in No. 6 spot, 6-1, 7-5. The Chanticleers responded by taking the next three matches with the first win coming from Ramos, as he defeated Taushner, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 position. Following Ramos, Gordon picked up a win at the No. 1 spot, getting a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rosindo. Clinching the winning point was Funkhouser in the No. 4 position, defeating Dias, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, Funkhouser extended his unbeaten streak to four in singles. To end the day, Tzvetkov and Vlaskin were defeated in the third and fifth spots.
The Chanticleers continue the road swing tomorrow at Wofford, Thursday, Feb. 11 at 12 p.m., with Coastal trying to give the Terriers their first loss at home since 2008.
