FOREST CITY, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (31-5, 10-0 Big South) used the big inning to defeat Gardner-Webb 24-10 April 17 in Forest City, N.C. The Chants scored eight runs in the third and 11 in the seventh as they scored 20 or more runs in a game for the fourth time this season. Coastal also has won 12 straight games and lead the nation with 31 wins.
Coastal used its speed to score a pair of runs in the first. Junior Scott Woodward singled to right with one out. He stole second base and the Chants put two on as senior Jose Iglesias walked. The duo then executed a double steal as redshirt-sophomore Tommy La Stella struck out. Senior Adam Rice then scored a pair as he doubled down the left field line.
The Chanticleer offense exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Woodward was hit to lead off the inning. He then stole his third base of the day. Iglesias walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. La Stella scored Woodward on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Rice moved Iglesias to third with a single and sophomore Daniel Bowman scored a run with a double to left. Sophomore Steve Davis reached safely on a Texas League double to left and redshirt-senior Chance Gilmore brought everyone in with a home run over the wall in left field to make it 8-0. Sophomore Taylor Motter doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch. Noel walked and Woodward brought two runners home with a single to right.
Gilmore hit his second home run of the game in the fifth, as he hit another over the wall in left field. It was the second multi-home run game of the season, as he hit two in the North Carolina State game Feb. 28.
Gardner-Webb got on the board in the fifth as Benji Jackson doubled home Ty Boyles with two outs. Coastal got that run back in the sixth as Woodward doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from redshirt-junior Keith Hardwick.
Coastal established a season high for runs in an inning in the seventh. Motter drove in the first run on a double to left. Freshman Josh Conway singled to center to score a pair of runs. Redshirt-sophomore Josh Keener then hit his first career home run over the wall in left. Two walks and two Gardner-Webb errors brought in the sixth run of the inning. Junior Luke Schlechte walked in redshirt-sophomore Rich Witten and Motter cleared the bases with a grand slam, his fifth home run of the season.
Redshirt-sophomore Tucker Frawley led off the eighth with his second home run of the season, a shot to straightaway center field. Gardner-Webb would score three runs in the eighth and six in the ninth, which included a grand slam from Kurt Fulginiti.
Woodward, Gilmore and Motter had three hits apiece for the Chants. Motter drove in five runs and had three runs scored. Gilmore had four RBI's, while Woodward scored three runs and had four stolen bases in the win.
For Gardner-Webb, Fulginiti was 3-for-5 with five RBI's.
Meo earned his seventh win of the season, allowing just an unearned run with four strikeouts in five innings pitched. Michael Hanzlik was tagged with the loss, allowing 10 runs and nine hits in 2.1 innings.
Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb wrap up the three-game series Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m., at McNair Field.
