WICHITA, Kan. - Coastal Carolina University senior catcher Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John's) has been named as of the 12 semifinalists for the Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced today (May 19).
Iglesias, who has played in 49 games behind the plate this season, is hitting .344 with 14 doubles, 13 home runs and 65 runs-batted-in for the Chanticleers. He leads the Big South in RBI's and is third in slugging percentage at .639. Iglesias has committed just two errors behind the dish and has just four passed balls. He also has thrown out 15 runners trying to steal, including two May 18 against the College of Charleston. Statistics will now be compiled on each of the semifinalists and sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, 2010 prior to the NCAA Regionals and Major League Baseball Draft.
A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2010.
Coastal Carolina has a history with the Johnny Bench Award, as Dock Doyle was named a finalist for the award in 2008.
Coastal Carolina will end the regular-season with a three-game series at Radford. The first game will take place Thursday, May 20 at 3 p.m.
