BUIES CREEK, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team bested Campbell in every statistical category except the most important one in a 3-2 defeat tonight. This was the first of three matches on the week for the Chanticleers who fall to 1-3-0 with the loss.
The Chants, which defeated College of Charleston 4-2 this past Saturday, out shot the Fighting Camels 15-12 and tallied a 10-6 edge in shots on goal in the contest.
The match was a defensive struggle throughout the first half as the teams went into the locker rooms tied at zero.
Coastal struck first in the game when senior Colleen Schohl scored an unassisted goal after she tracked down a rebound off a shot by Christina Stern in the 12th minute of the second half. The goal was Schohl's first on the season, as well as, her first career goal at Coastal Carolina.
Coastal found the goal again 12 minutes later off the foot of freshman Christina Stern, who took a loose ball in the box and placed it just inside the right post to put the Chants up 2-0 mid way through the second half.
Of the six goals scored on the season by the Chanticleers, five have come from the Chants following shots in the box and making the extra effort to get a second chance shot off of the rebound.
Campbell recorded their first goal on the night in the 70th minute of the match as Kaili Terry found Caitlin Schneider for a header off of a free kick to close the Chants lead to 2-1. The Fighting Camels game tying goal was also a header, but this time it was Olga Ekblom who found the back of the net after tracking down a loose ball in the keeper's box.
Campbell was able to secure the game in overtime as Terry connected for her second goal of the evening as she took a free kick to the upper right corner of the net.
Chants sophomore keep Jessica Barton recorded three saves on the night, bringing her season total to 15 through four games.
The Chants will be on the road again this Friday and Sunday as they compete in the UNCW Hilton Gardens Invitational. Coastal will play tournament host UNC-Wilmington at 7 p.m. on Friday and Southern Conference member Elon on Sunday at 11 a.m.
