WILMINGTON, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to Elon today 3-1 in their second and final game at the UNC Wilmington Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. The Chants (2-4-0) finished runner-up in the invitational after besting the host Seahawks 3-2 on Friday.
Once again sophomore goal keep Jessica Barton came up strong in the first half tallying five saves on the day while facing nine shots. Barton also helped keep the game within reach during the first half for the Chants as she made two diving saves to knock the ball harmlessly over the crossbar.
Elon struck first in the 23rd minute of the contest on a cross by Jaclyn Wood that found Jennifer McGorty who headed the ball home to give Elon the 1-0 advantage.
Elon found the back of the net for the second time in the 38th minute after Olivia Mackey served a corner kick into the box that connected with the head of Chelsey Stark who was able to sneak the ball past the outstretched arm of Barton.
Coastal was able to bring the game within one in the 40th minute of the first half off the left foot of senior Anna Tupy. Tupy was fed the ball at the top of the box and made a move past Elon's Lindsey Nusdeo to have an open look at the goal. The goal was Tupy's second of the season.
The Chants made a keeper change at the half as senior Amy Haggard made her second appearance on the season collecting two saves on the day.
The Chanticleers offense was on the attack early and often in the first half as Elon was unable to gain possession of the ball on Coastal's side of the field until 10 minutes had already elapsed in the half.
Coastal had a great opportunity to score in the 13th minute of the second half as Amanda Clark gathered a loose ball in the box with Elon's keeper well out of position. Clark turned and fired a shot off her right foot that errantly deflected away off the left post.
Elon extended their lead in the 69th minute of the contest as Catherine Brinkman found Kimmie Krauss streaking down the right side. Krauss then faced the Chants keeper one-on-one and was able to slip the ball between the near post and the reaching arms of Haggard to give Elon the 3-1 advantage.
Coastal continued to pressure Elon's defense to no avail throughout the second half as the Chants registered four of their six shots on goal in the half.
Chelsea Strange and Anna Tupy garnered UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Invitational all invitational team honors.
Coastal will take the next four days to prepare to take on Appalachian State in another non-conference match on Friday, September 10. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Boone, N.C.
