MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Coastal Carolina women's soccer was defeated by Cincinnati, 4-nil, at the College of Charleston Cup on Sunday, September 11.
The Chanticleers fall to 0-6-1 with the loss as the Bearcats improve to 4-2-2.
Cincinnati jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play as Mackenzie Grause found the back of the Chanticleer net for her third goal of the season. Emily Hebbeler added a second goal in the 17' on a free kick from 30 yards out that went unmolested through the box before hitting nylon.
The Chants had a chance to cut the Cincinnati lead in half in the 27 minute. Following a Morgan Thomas corner kick, Cisca Okoko fired a hard shot that sailed just high over the crossbar. Christina Stern nearly tallied her third goal of the season in the 38' with a rocket of a shot that appeared headed toward the back of the net until the Bearcat keeper was able to deflect the ball harmlessly away.
Cincinnati added their two additional goals in the 61' and 62' as Hebbeler scored her second of the afternoon and assisted on Christi Howard's third goal of the season.
Coastal was able to rip off four shots in the second half, including one on frame off the foot of Maggie McGavin. McGavin's shot on goal came with just under three minutes remaining forcing the Cincinnati goalkeeper to record her second stop of the game.
McGavin led the Chants with three shots while Ashley Day, Christina Stern and Okoko finished with a shot each.
Chanticleer netminder Saundra Baron corralled four saves in the contest bringing her season total to 28 through seven games.
Stern and Okoko were named to the College of Charleston Cup All-Tournament team for their efforts on the weekend.
The Chanticleer will travel east to Knoxville, Tenn. on Friday, Sept. 16 to take on the Volunteers. Kick off for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
