Sept. 4, 2011

Final Stats

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to Brown, 3-1, to close the Liberty Invitational on Sunday, September 4.

Brown improves to 2-0 with the win, while Coastal drops to 0-4-1.

The Chanticleers controlled the pace of play throughout the first half registering 10 shots during the period, including six on frame. However, Coastal would find itself behind on the scoreboard entering the half as the Bears were able to knock in a header off a set piece in the 33rd minute of play.

The first 15 minutes of the second half saw the two sides exchange shots with neither team able to find the back of the net. Brown broke through and scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 72nd minute of play. The Bears' Eliza Marshall received a cross in the box and buried a shot into the left corner just past the outstretched arms of the Chants Saundra Baron.

Brown would add another goal at the 79 minute mark as Marshall lobbed a shot from the left corner that bounced off the post before coming to rest in the right side of the net.

After the final Brown goal, Coastal would continue to press forward resulting in six shot over the final 10 minutes of regulation. In the 83rd minute Rylie Johnson fired consecutive shots, the first banging off the crossbar and the second off the right post. Sophomore Christina Sternwas able to corral the rebound on Johnson's second shot and slot the ball home to score her second goal of the season.

Coastal would attempt three more shots over the final six minutes, but the Bears' goalkeeper would save each attempt to preserve the 3-1 score.

The Chants outshot the Bears 20-17 in the contest and held a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Coastal also tallied three corner kicks to Brown's one.

With Coastal being such a young program (inaugural season was 2000) the record book is rewritten often. Freshman Saundra Baronhas played all 470 minutes in goal this season ranking her sixth all-time in minutes played and sixth in saves with 21 through five games this season.

The Chants return to the pitch on Friday, September 9 against Old Dominion at 5 p.m. in Charleston, S.C. as part of the College of Charleston Tournament. Coastal will then wrap up the tournament against Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Noon.
