Final Stats

CHARLESTON - Jacob May hit a triple and scored the game winning run in the seventh inning then made an impressive catch in the bottom of the eighth to lead Coastal Carolina to a 3-2 victory at The Citadel Tuesday at Riley Park. The Chanticleers (16-12) and Bulldogs (16-13) will meet again Wednesday in Myrtle Beach with first pitch set for 6 pm at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

May was not the only Chanticleer that was key in the win as Austin Kerr (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings in relief. The sophomore scattered three hits and walked none with three strikeouts. After giving up two hits in his first inning (the fifth), Kerr used a double play in the sixth to retire his last 13 in a row.

Jake Kane had two of Coastal's four hits in the win, getting an RBI in the fourth and contributing to another Chanticleer run in the fifth.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Joe Jackson drew a two-out walk and Bo Thompson followed with an RBI double down the left field line.

The Citadel extended its advantage in the third as Drew DeKerlegand hit a one-out, solo home run to right field.

Coastal got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Will Remillard hit a leadoff double and scored two batters later on Kane's RBI single through the right side of the infield.

The Chants knotted the game at 2-2 in the sixth. Remillard walked and Colin Hering was hit by a pitch. Kane laid down a bunt single to first. On the play, the Citadel pitcher bobbled the ball and Remillard scored. Coastal loaded the bases on another Bulldog error, but Citadel shortstop Jonathan Stokes made an impressive diving catch on a Nick Oberg line drive to keep the game tied.

Coastal scored its third unanswered run in the top of the seventh. May hit a one-out triple and scored on Alex Buccilli's sacrifice fly to right.

In the bottom of the eighth and Coastal holding a one-run lead, leadoff hitter Mason Davis ripped a ball to deep left-center field but May made a long run from center field and laid out to catch the ball on the warning track to get the out.

Coastal starter Alex Cunningham pitched the first four innings. He allowed four hits and two runs with a walk and three strikeouts.

NOTE: Coastal Carolina will host Liberty in a weekend series. Game times are Noon Friday, Noon Saturday for an ESPNU national telecast and 10 am Sunday. Due to the early start times, gates at Pelicans Ballpark will open one hour prior to each game.
