Final Stats

SPARTANBURG - Three different freshmen scored their first collegiate goals and the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team notched its third straight shutout as the Chanticleers rolled over USC Upstate 4-0 Sunday afternoon.

Taylor Valentine scored late in the first half while Sam Patterson and Amber Adams added second-half goals and the Chants (2-1-1) capped a successful weekend roadtrip with a dominant performance over Upstate (1-2-1).

Sophomore forward Charlotte Ratcliff also tallied her first goal as a Chanticleer to cap the scoring and Miki Antzoulatos and Maddie Phillips each recorded assists as Coastal outshot the Spartans 23-2 in the game.

Megan Spencer and freshman Becca Austin combined on the shutout in goal, with the Chants now having kept opponents off the scoreboard for the last 328 minutes of play.

"It was a good all-around game," Coastal head coach Paul Hogan said. "We really dictated the pace of the game. We were a bit sluggish in the first half, but finished strong. Mikayla (Williams) and Rylie (Johnson) were again very strong in the back."

The Chanticleers owned nearly all of the possession time in the first half Sunday and had a goal nullified before they finally struck officially in the 41st minute. Antzoulatos took a pass in space on the left wing and sent a cross right in front where Valentine, a midfielder from Southlake, Texas, was there to one-touch the ball inside the near post. The assist was Antzoulatos' first point as a Chant.

Coastal recorded the game's first eight attempts, beginning with a header by Kacey Kelley that rolled just wide in the fourth minute. The Chants then generated three corner kicks during a three-minute span, with a header by Johnson on the final one going over the crossbar.

It appeared CCU had broken through in 30th minute when freshman Ellie Taylor was led into the box for a one-on-one by a pass following steal in the middle third. Taylor easily put the ball by the Upstate keeper but was ruled offside on the play.

Upstate finally got their first shot of the game in the 36th minute, but the long attempt was quickly blocked by a Chant defender. Coastal then got on the scoreboard and continued to control play after halftime, with Patterson and Adams scoring just over eight minutes apart to build the 3-0 cushion.

Patterson, a midfielder from Jacksonville, Fla., found the net in the 56th minute with a high shot over the keeper from 15 yards out after she fended off a Spartan defender.

Adams, a midfielder from Piscataway, N.J., then scored right in front on a rebound off of her own shot that was set up by a cross from Phillips.

Ratcliff tacked an unassisted goal with six and half minutes left, getting by a defender with a move to the right and putting a shot into the right corner.

The Chants finished with 10 shots on goal and five corner kicks, while Upstate put just one shot on net and was held without a corner.

Spencer played the first 70-plus minutes and recorded one save, before Austin, a Dallastown, Pa. native, came on for her first collegiate action to close it out.

Coastal will hit the road again next weekend for a pair of games in the College of Charleston Cup, beginning with a matchup against Kent State Friday at 5 p.m.
