HANAHAN, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team opened its 2013-14 campaign with 18 holes Sunday and sits in 17th place in the 20-team field at the College of Charleston-hosted Charleston Classic, played on the 6,204-yard, par 72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
The Chanticleers carded a team score of 303 (+15) and were led by sophomore Marissa Hinchman. 2013 NCAA Championship participant Mississippi State leads the 20-team field with a score of 282 (-6) followed by South Carolina (285) and Clemson (285).
Hinchman played the front nine 1-over with the only blemish coning as a bogey on her third hole of the day. She posted bogeys on 10 and 12 after making the turn, but steadied and carded five straight pars before closing the round with a birdie on 18. Hinchman's 2-over score of 74 ties her for 38th in the 108-competitor field.
Frida Castilloposted a 3-over 75 to open her junior campaign. She bookended her front nine with bogeys, making the turn at 2-over. She went on the posted eight pars on the back nine compared to a single bogey. She enters the second round of play tied for 47th overall.
Lena Schaeffner and Nadia Luttnershot matching 5-over 77s on the day to tie for 76th on the individual leaderboard. Schaeffner posted a birdie on the par-5 15th, while Luttner birdied the par-4 first and 10th holes.
Newcomer Emee Herbertrounded out the Chanticleer contingent with an 8-over 80. The junior is tied for 96th overall.
Round two of the 11th annual Charleston Classic continues with 18 holes on Monday before concluding with a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
