BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Kacey Kelley scored two goals and Darbie Kelley dished out three assists to lead the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team to a convincing 4-1 victory over host Gardner-Webb Wednesday night.
The Chanticleers improved to 2-0 in Big South Conference play and evened their overall mark at 5-5-1, while notching their first road win of the season. Gardner-Webb dropped to 1-1-1 in the conference and 4-6-1 overall.
Darbie Kelley assisted on Coastal's first three goals, tying the program-record for most assists in a game, equaling the mark held by Kristin Wisse, Bobbie Parsons and Ashleigh Gunning.
Kacey Kelley scored in the 11th and 60th minutes to give her eight goals for the season. Daniella Famili tallied the game-winner, breaking a 1-1 tie in the first minute of the second half and Sam Patterson put the game away with her first goal of the season in the 79th minute.
Coastal found the back of the net four times against a Runnin' Bulldogs team that had recorded shutouts in their first two conference games against Winthrop and High Point. The Chants dominated play for all but the last five minutes of the first half and outshot Gardner-Webb 15-8 in the game, including 9-3 in attempts on goal.
It started with a nice combination play set up by Famili and Darbie Kelley and finished off by Kacey Kelley to give the Chants a 1-0 lead. Working with the ball in the midfield, Famili fed a pass over to Darbie, who then led her sister with a throughball up the seam. Kacey ran to onto the ball toward the right side of the box and put a right-footed blast into the top of the net.
The Chants had a couple of other opportunities to score in the first half but a shot by Kacey Kelley In the 22nd minute from the left corner of the box went just wide and an attempt by Famili just over a minute later was stopped by Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Krista Chauvin.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' only goal came on an individual play by freshman in the 42nd minute as she dribbled past three Chant defenders into the box and a put shot under the diving Austin, who had come out to cut off the angle.
However, Coastal wasted no time regaining the momentum and the lead once the second half started as Famili made it 2-1 just 30 seconds after the restart. Amber Adams sent a ball in fromt he left side to Darbie Kelley, who controlled it and passed ahead to Famili in the middle of the box. Famil dribbled past Chauvin and put it in the empty net for her third tally of the year.
Patterson nearly scored in the 59th minute on a long shot that was just tipped over the crossbar by Chauvin. Less than two minutes later, though, the Kelleys hooked up again to make it a two-goal lead on a similar play to the opening goal. After a Chanticleer counterattack was slowed by Gardner-Webb, CCU worked the ball back toward the midfield and it made its way to Darbie. She slotted the ball up the middle and Kacey ran on to it in the right side of the box and put a low shot into the far corner.
Patterson then capped the scoring, ripping a high shot from just outside the box over backup goalkeeper Amy Schmitt and off the bottom of the crossbar after making a run up the right side.
Austin made two saves in the first half. Faith Farley played the second half in net and did not face a shot on goal.
The Chanticleers return home for their next two games, beginning with a 5 p.m. matchup against High Point (1-0-1 BSC) on Saturday.
