Streaking Chants Blank Campbell, Move Into Tie for First

Oct. 15, 2014

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team continued to play lights out Wednesday night, shutting out Campbell 2-0 to remain undefeated in the Big South Conference and unbeaten in its last seven games overall.

Kacey Kelley and Shelby Evans tallied first-half goals for the Chanticleers (8-5-2 overall), who moved to 5-0-1 in conference play, the best start through six league games in program history. The 2008 team, which won the regular-season championship, had victories in its first five games, but dropped the sixth.

Coastal also moved into a tie with preseason favorite Liberty for first place this season as the Flames were off on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Campbell (5-6-3, 3-2-2) had its three-game win and five-match unbeaten streaks snapped.

After both teams struggled to maintain possession for the first 10 minutes of the game, the Chants struck for both of their goals in a span of less than three minutes on similar setups.

Kelley got the first one in the 16th minute and set a new career high with her 10th tally of the season. A corner kick by Darbie Kelley bounced back out to her and she sent the ball to the top of the box to Camille Christie. Christie then fed it on to Kacey Kelley, who ripped a one-touch shot into the top left corner, extending her streak of points in a game to seven in a row. The assist was Christie's first of the season.

The Kelleys then combined to set up Evans' third goal of the season to make it 2-0 in the 18th minute. Kacey ran down a ball deep in the left corner and crossed toward the six-yard box. Darbie Kelley was there and deflected it over to the back post for Evans, who chested the ball into the near side. The two assists give Darbie Kelley a team-high five on the year.

The two goals were more than enough for Becca Austin and Faith Farley, who teamed for their third shutout in the last four games, while the defense has allowed just 10 shots on goal in those four matches.

Coastal outshot Campbell 10-6 in this game, but the teams combined for just three attempts on net. The Camels' only one was stopped by Austin in the first half. The lone threat to Farley came on a pass into the box midway through the second half, but she came out to pounce on the ball before the Campbell player could get to it.

The Chants dominated possession in the second half while recording six shots. Play was halted briefly late in the game when a minor power outage took out some of the lights at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Kacey Kelley now has 24 points on the season, tied for sixth-most in program history.

The Chanticleers hit the road for their next two games, beginning with a trip to UNC Asheville Saturday for a 2 p.m. game. Coastal plays its final regular-season home game on Friday, Oct. 24 against Liberty.
