MYRTLE BEACH - Junior Austin Kerr pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits along the way, while Colin Hering and G.K. Young hit home runs to lead Coastal Carolina to a 4-0 victory over Presbyterian College Friday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
With the shutout, the Chanticleers (19-21, 10-7 Big South) win their fourth straight conference series. Coastal and Presbyterian (12-25-1, 5-12 Big South) are scheduled to play the final game of the series on Saturday at Noon. Prior to first pitch, Coastal Carolina will have a ceremony recognizing head coach Gary Gilmore's 1,000th career win.
Kerr (1-0) was making just his fifth career start in his 69th appearance with the Chants. The left hander struck out a career-high seven batters, including two in the ninth inning, with one walk. This was Kerr's first career complete with his previous long outing being six innings.
Kerr took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, getting two outs in the frame before Brad Zebedis hit a double. The only other hit Kerr allowed was a two-out single in the eighth.
Coastal Carolina got on the scoreboard first. Connor Owings started the bottom of the third with a single and scored two batters later on Tyler Chadwick's RBI double to right-center field.
In the sixth, Hering put Coastal on top 2-0 with his first home run of the season.
The Chanticleers doubled their lead in the eighth. Chadwick walked and Young cleared the bases with his third home run of the season.
In addition to getting seven strikeouts, Kerr induced 14 ground ball outs, with shortstop Michael Paez racking up eight assists.
Blue Hose starter Chandler Knox (5-5) also pitched a career game. He only allowed five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
