ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to complete a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field. The Chanticleers, which won the weekend series, fall to 14-19 overall, 6-6 in the Big South, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-22, 4-8.
The game, which lasted just one hour and 49 minutes, featured complete game efforts by both starting pitchers. UNCA's Corey Randall (1-3) earned the win, allowing four hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts. Coastal freshman Chase Adkins (0-3) was the tough-luck loser, allowing four hits and two runs with a walk and four strikeouts.
For the fifth consecutive game, Coastal scored first. Connor Owings hit the first pitch of the game to center field for a double and moved to third on a Steven Whitaker sacrifice bunt. Zach Remillard followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give Coastal the early 1-0 lead.
UNCA tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Lucas Owens started the home half by being hit by a pitch. He took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on sacrifice bunt and scored on a Derek Smith RBI ground out.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Tanner Bush had a leadoff bunt single. After a ground out put Bush on second, Hunter Bryant delivered a two-out, RBI single to left field to drive in Bush.
Tyler Chadwick led the Chants, getting two of the team's four hits.
Coastal Carolina will continue its nine-game road swing with a trip to Chapel Hill to face nationally-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday at 6 pm.
