TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Alex Ross threw one touchdown pass and ran for another and Coastal Carolina routed Florida A&M 48-3 on Saturday night.
Ross threw a 25-yard touchdown strike to John Israel, and ran 13-yards for a score.
However, it was the play of All-American Quinn Backus on defense that set the stage early. After going up 7-3, Backus intercepted a pass, the seventh of his career, which led to a four-play, 30-yard scoring drive. Two plays later, Backus forced FAMU quarterback Damien Fleming to fumble. Calvin Hollenhorst picked up the fumble on the four yard line and scored for a 21-3 cushion. It marked the second straight week Backus has forced a fumble that returned for a Chanticleer touchdown.
De'Angelo Henderson had touchdown runs of 13 and 2 yards and finished with 107 rushing yards on 13 attempts (8.2 average).
The Chanticleers also came up big on special teams as Denzel Rice blocked a punt, and Osharmar Abercrombie ran for a 14-yard touchdown on the ensuing play for his first career TD to stretch the lead to 28-3.
Ryan Granger capped the scoring by kicking a CCU-record, 51-yard field goal.
Chase Varnadore kicked a 42-yard field goal for Florida A&M (0-3) on its first drive in the first quarter for the Rattlers' lone points. It marked the second consecutive week CCU has held an opponent to just three points, which is a first in school history.
