Charleston, S.C. - On the final day of competition at the College of Charleston Invitational,
Honami Yazawa, the 2014 Big South Freshman of the Year, was crowned the champion of the A1 Singles flight.
Yazawa reached the final match after defeating Natalie Franklin of Mercer and Yasmeen Ebada of Samford on Friday. In Saturday's championship match, Yazawa downed Annika Sillianpaa of UNC Wilmington in a tough, three-set match.
Yazawa took the first set 6-3 before falling in the second 4-6. The sophomore then rallied to win the match-deciding set 6-2.
The Chants also had two other singles players competing in flight championships. Sara Bondar fell 6-2, 6-3 to Jessica Northcutt (Samford) in the final match of the A2 Singles flight, while Cari Berry dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Jenny Falcone (CofC) in the B1 Singles final.
In doubles, Coastal's pair of Bondar and Marie Babayan lost a semifinal match to Schofield and Maddox of College of Charleston in the A1 Doubles flight.
In the semifinal of the A2 Doubles flight, Berry and Natalie Wall fell 8-4 to College of Charleston's pair of Jones and McAmis.
The Chanticleers will return to action Oct. 3-5 as they take part in the UNC Wilmington Fall Invitational.
